Don't Forget to Screw Your White Balance

editing Jul 01, 2024

By Rich Cooper

I just completed some edits from recent ‘Ops Shoots’… And I wanted to keep it to two shots from each of the three events, and to keep the style (mostly) in a modern vintage look.

But that meant I couldn’t post this! And there’s a message behind it!

Kinda in line with our homework recently of editing a vintage pic, but this is not one from the an old HD as it was taken this month as you no doubt know.
Anyway, another thing to watch for when “reverse engineering” our quality RAW files and mega-sensors is that film had no white balance settings! You could buy tungsten-rated film (for example) and you could sometimes “cross process” a film if you had shot it completely wrong…
But yeah, if this was one night in Ninety-Eighty-Something and I was stood watching a Lightning hunt Bears out of a Q launch… I would not be able to do anything else but hold on for dear life and hope that the film would cope. Mayyyybe I would have had a “save my arse” 400 ASA film in the bag, mayyyybe even 1000 ASA – but the grain was shocking.
I absolutely have slides that look just like this… One particular roll I remember was Tomcats on the ramp at NAS Oceana in the early 90s about to go on a cruise. The maintenance lights in the hangar were just too much to cope with.
So anyway, I processed this image from Bruntingthorpe and deconstructed a load of stuff – but importantly, I changed the WB too AND the Tint sliders.
Oh, the only other thing though… It would have been a lot more blurred than this with excitement if I had taken it in this moment hahah.

Here’s the digits…

And here’s some other versions I quite liked… Enjoy!
