Why You Are More Creative Than You Think

Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday, by COAP Online

Aviation photography attracts practical people. Many of us like aircraft because they’re engineered, predictable, and precise. We like to see all the aircraft, the serial number, the markings, the shape. So it makes sense that “creativity” can feel like a vague concept that belongs to someone else.

But creativity in aviation photography isn’t as illusive as an F-22 in the Mach Loop. It’s a skill built from repeatable decisions.

Creativity is all about intent
When an aviation image looks “creative”, it’s usually because the photographer made intentional choices. They didn’t necessarily invent something new, but instead they chose what to emphasise and what to simplify.
That might be things like…
Placing the aircraft in a dynamic composition
Using a foreground layer to build depth
Choosing a shutter speed that makes motion feel believable, or an aperture that splits subjects with narrow DoF
Editing with a clear goal instead of chasing sliders
None of that requires a special gene! It’s actually a process.
The fastest way to feel more creative - add one constraint
Creativity grows when your choices have boundaries. Try one of these simple constraints on your next edit:
One-word goal: Clean, moody, dramatic, documentary, cinematic
One hero element: Cockpit glow, vapour, landing smoke, livery colour, reflections
One technique: Only local masks, or only tonal shaping before colour
Constraints remove overwhelm and force a clearer set of decisions. That’s why “set the goal before you touch a slider” is so powerful. It turns editing into intent, not guesswork.
Proof you’re already creative
If you’ve ever:
Waited for better light
Moved to clean up a background
Chosen one frame out of 10 because it “felt right”
Adjusted an edit because you wanted a different mood
That’s creativity. It’s judgement. And judgement is a skill that improves with reps!
Consistency builds style
Style isn’t something you just stumble into. It’s something you build by repeating a simple process and learning what you personally like. The more often you make intentional choices, the more “creative” you’ll feel, because you’ll trust your decisions.
