How To Photograph Aircraft In Harsh Midday Sun

Jul 07, 2026

Harsh midday sun is one of the most common lighting problems in aviation photography.

Airshows, fly-ins and airport visits often happen when the light is high, bright and contrasty. The aircraft may be worth photographing, but the conditions can produce blown highlights, dark undersides and flat-looking colour.

Protect the aircraft highlights

In strong sun, bright aircraft surfaces can clip quickly. White fuselages, silver metal, canopy reflections and sunlit leading edges are the main areas to watch.

Use your histogram and highlight warnings to make sure important aircraft detail survives. A slightly darker exposure is often easier to edit than a file where the fuselage has gone pure white.

Watch the aircraft angle

Harsh light changes quickly as the aircraft turns.

A banked aircraft may catch light across the top surfaces and look powerful. A flat pass with the underside facing you may look heavy and dark. Rather than treating every pass equally, look for moments where the aircraft’s shape works with the light.

This is especially important with fast jets, aerobatic displays and aircraft with reflective paint or polished metal.

Edit for the light you had

One common mistake is trying to make harsh midday light look like soft evening light. That often leads to strange colour, muddy shadows or overprocessed skies.

Instead, aim for a clean, believable edit. Control the highlights, open shadows where needed, and use local masks to guide attention to the aircraft.

Midday aviation images can still work well. They may just need a different goal from softer light images.

Inside COAP Online, we cover shooting and editing choices for real aviation lighting conditions. The Merge post for this Tutorial Tuesday gives members a practical Lightroom approach for harsh sun files, including highlight control and underside shadow recovery.
