How To Take Better Aircraft Taxi Shots: The 4-Step Checklist

tutorial tuesday Jun 30, 2026

Aircraft taxi shots are a major part of aviation photography, especially at airshows, airports, arrivals days and ramp events.

They can look simple because the subject is moving slowly, but that is also why small details become more noticeable. The difference between an average taxi shot and a strong one often comes down to timing.

Watch the nose angle

A slight three-quarter angle usually gives the aircraft shape. It shows the nose, fuselage and some depth across the wings or tail.

A perfect side-on shot can work well for documentation, but it may feel flat if the light or background is not helping. A slight turn towards you can make the aircraft feel more dynamic.

Pay attention to the wheels

The wheels are easy to ignore, but they tell the viewer what the aircraft is doing.

A nose wheel turned slightly into the taxi direction can add movement, especially when combined with a creative twist or rotated crop angle.

This is especially noticeable with larger aircraft, warbirds and close taxiway shots.

Clean the background

Taxi shots often include clutter: cones, signs, barriers, vehicles, stairs, people and fences. Some of that is part of the aviation environment, but clutter directly behind the aircraft can weaken the photo.

Often waiting half a second can make all the difference. The aircraft moves past a sign, clears a vehicle, or turns into a cleaner patch of background, saving you time on removing any unwanted objects during editing.

Time the frame

A good taxi shot is the combined alignment of aircraft angle, wheel position, light and background.

Rather than simply holding the shutter down in burst mode, first scout the scene with your own eyes then watch how the aircraft is moving through the viewfinder to align things for the shot. The best moment may be brief, but it is usually achievable with anticipation.
